Roam is Sonos’ second compact speaker model, released to the public in April 2021. It boasts of a plethora of tricks and smart features, making every bit of it worth the money. If you’re looking for a portable device that can withstand wear and tear, then consider the Sonos Roam.

Before fully deciding to buy one, though, you’ll need to know your priorities. If you’re on a tight budget, then opt for a more cost-effective speaker. The Roam is also bass-heavy, so you’ll have to know firsthand where you plan to station it.

What Is Sonos Roam?

The Roam is a portable smart speaker manufactured by Sonos, the leading powerhouse in the multi-room system industry. It was described by the company as “the smartest speaker we have ever built”, and for good reason.

It is capable of listening to hands-free voice commands thanks to Google Assistant and Alexa. This won’t matter if you’re an iOS or Android user, you get to partake of the Roam’s smart facets and functionality.

It’s also an all-around speaker, capable of linking with different devices and accommodating their pairing mode. Whether you connect through the Sonos app, Bluetooth, or even AirPlay, the Roam will surely pull through.

How Does Sonos Roam Work?

As a member of the multi-room family, the Roam works as part of the extensive mesh network of home sound systems. It functions best via the Sonos controller app, together with other sister devices. Through this, you’re able to maximize its high-res audio and stream an almost infinite media tracklist.

However, this doesn’t mean the Roam is limited within the app only. In fact, it also works as a general Bluetooth speaker. It embodies the term ‘wireless’ perfectly, as it provides you a quality sound experience anywhere as long as you have a source device.

One thing you should note though is that the Roam works with WiFi as its backbone. Like all Sonos devices, it won’t operate without the help of wireless fidelity. You’ll need to complete the initial setup via WiFi for it to even be in working order.

When Did Sonos Roam Come Out?

Sonos had their big reveal for yet another product called the Roam in March 2021. However, the wireless speaker was officially released a month later for an initial price of $169. This makes it the cheapest of the brand’s extensive line of devices.

As the smallest model of speaker that Sonos has manufactured, you can consider it as their second shot at creating a portable product. The first one was the Move model, which is too burly and big to fit in a backpack. In this case, the Roam is truly Sonos’ first on-the-go speaker.

If you have the Sonos Move but are looking for a more handy device for travel, then you may consider the Roam. Here’s a quick table showing both of the portable speakers’ specs and differences:

Sonos Move Sonos Roam
Height 9.44 in (240 mm) 6.61 in (168 mm)
Width 6.29 in (160 mm) 2.44 in (62 mm)
Depth 4.96 in (126 mm) 2.36 in (60 mm)

Looking at the table, you’ll find that both the Roam and its predecessor have mostly the same features. Think of the Roam as a more compact version of the Move, much cheaper and a lot more mobile.

Is Sonos Roam a Good Speaker?

Sonos has long proven itself as a titan in the speaker industry, so it’s no surprise all their products are top-notch. The Roam is no exception, being the brand’s first-ever handy device you can truly bring anywhere. Although it’s the smallest model Sonos has ever built, you can’t deny how good it is with its specs and convenience.

Generally, you can consider a portable speaker on the good side if it excels in four categories. First, ease of connection is something to prioritize. A speaker with more than a few pairing modes is ideal to help it adapt anywhere.

Sonos designed the Roam to function best within the controller app. However, it also has Bluetooth features. Additionally, it is capable of connecting via AirPlay and even caters to stereo pairs.

The range should also be exceptional. This is important as you’re traveling and would like to avoid signal interference. The Roam is more than enough in this regard, it has Bluetooth 5.0 which can read signals from a maximum of 800 feet (240 m).

The third is durability, essential for a portable speaker to weather outside conditions. Your Roam is high-level in this regard, completely resistant against dust. It is even resistant for thirty minutes when submerged to about 3.3 feet (1 m) of water.

Most importantly, the audio quality should be nonnegotiable. Sonos is not one of the leading speaker producers for nothing, so you can be assured of Roam’s sound competence.

How Is the Sound on Sonos Roam?

The Roam will provide you with a dynamic sonic presentation that you would not expect from a speaker of its size. It may be compact and the smallest of the line, but expect that it won’t lose when it comes to impact.

First off, you’ll easily notice how rich-sounding the Roam’s bass is. It’s not just a mid-tier level, but more of a bass-heavy rhythm providing a fuller music experience.

The treble is a bit subdued, but this is actually more of a good thing. Since the Roam is designed for outside use, too many mid and lower trebles would not be well received.

Combining powerful bass with a more gentle treble output will provide you with a voice-forward audio performance. You can easily make out the rich, deeper vocals amidst the almost overwhelming bass and gentle synths. This is an advantage if you’re using the device as a party speaker, or as a general outdoor device.

If you’re planning to use the Roam as more of an indoor speaker you bring back and forth to the bathroom, then the strong bass may not work. Don’t snuff out its chance though, because Sonos considered this scenario as well. You can easily adjust the bass inside the controller app, tailoring the sound output to your desire.

Does the Sonos Roam Get Loud?

Not only does the Roam get loud, but it can get overwhelming depending on the place you plan to station it. Designed to deliver music in a wide, open space, you’ll find that the sound output can be piercing at times. This is the case if you put it in a closed-off room, with several walls for the sound to ricochet.

On a positive note, the Roam can get even louder if you find that it’s not up to your standard. Sonos included their Loudness function in the wireless speakers, as with all their smart devices. This will increase certain frequencies, further increasing intensity and sound quality.

How Loud Is Sonos Roam?

For a portable speaker that is not much in terms of size, the Sonos Roam is surprisingly loud. It may not be as thundering as the brand’s larger models, but the compact speaker can easily fill up a middle-sized room with thumping, textured music.

The company itself claims that the Roam has precision-engineered acoustics. These deliver the clarity, depth, and fullness you only see in a much bulkier speaker.

With two class-H amplifiers driving one tweeter and one mid-woofer, the Roam is a powerhouse of its own. True, it does not match up with the Move, but it’s quite close thanks to Sonos’ genius design.

How Many dB Is Sonos Roam?

The Roam has a maximum volume of 86.6 decibels when you listen from a distance of 3.3 feet (1 m). For reference, this sound level is almost equivalent to a cinema, heavy traffic, or even a police car siren. With this, the speaker can wipe the floor with other similar-sized competitors in the market.

Here’s a quick reference at how many decibels the Roam measures up at different volumes:

Volume Sonos Roam’s Decibel Level at 1 meter Equivalent to
60% 68 dB Normal conversation, shower
80% 76 dB Vacuum cleaner, city traffic

Most speakers would lose out on the audio quality once it reaches its paramount amplification. You could say that the Sonos Roam is an exception to this occurrence. The device does not sound cut-off, boxed in, or boomy when put at its maximum sound volume.

How Many Watts Is a Sonos Roam?

The Sonos Roam has a speaker maximum output of 10 watts. To put it simply, wattage in speakers means its capacity to handle power, equal to how loud and clean it would play.

In this regard, you can say that the Roam falls under the powerful category, enough to blast music in a living room. When used outside, it is impressive enough to deliver high-quality sound levels. The device is loud but not enough for the neighbors to complain about the noise.

Does Sonos Roam Have Bass?

The Sonos Roam has bass — a remarkably prominent one at that. This makes the compact speaker a perfect companion in your getaway trips as the thumping bass helps with clarity. It also provides you with the right amount of bold and highs, making for a nice and clear audio experience.

If you find the bass-heavy specs too much, you can easily adjust it according to your preference. This is ideal if you’re more inclined to use the Roam at home, and not as a speaker you bring to camping trips.

How to Adjust Bass in Sonos Roam

Maybe you’d like to make the treble a bit more prominent, and the bass a little subdued in your Roam. Luckily, you have the Sonos controller app to let you customize the audio output to your liking.

With the EQ feature available in the program, not only can you adjust the bass, but also plenty of other sound specifications. Here’s how to do it step-by-step:

If You’re Using an iOS or Android Device

  • Open the Sonos controller application. Navigate to the Settings page, then click on System.
  • Choose the room in which you’ve stationed the Roam. Then go to the EQ option and drag the sliders according to your sound sensitivity.

If You’re Using Mac or PC

  • Launch the Sonos application on your gadget. If you’re using a Macbook, go to the Sonos drop-down menu on the upper left screen. Then, choose Preferences.
  • If you’re using a PC, tap on the Manage drop-down menu located on the top screen. Go to Settings.
  • Tap EQ Settings then select the target room you listed the Roam in. You’ll find a few sliders which you can adjust, including the Bass and Treble.

Here are the four audio aspects you can adjust in the Equalizer option:

Audio Setting Function
Bass This function controls the lower frequency audio including the low tones, frequency, and range.
Treble This slider controls the high-frequency audio and will make the sound more detailed.
Balance This is usually situated in the middle by default. However, you can adjust this to increase or decrease volume output on the left and right channels.
Loudness This option not only increases the volume output, but also the high and low frequencies. It helps with ear sensitivity and evens out the sound.

Is Sonos Roam Stereo or Mono?

With the Roam’s high-res ability, you’d think that it has a pretty complicated driver tech. However, the speaker is set in mono audio rather than the sophisticated stereo alternative.

This doesn’t mean that Sonos has held back on the Roam though. Mono is actually the secret to the device’s versatility in orientation.

Since it uses only a mono channel, the sound comes from only a single position and source. What makes the speaker unique is that it is angled: putting it at an upright ear level will provide you with better clarity. If you put it lower on its side, then the device will direct the audio upward in your direction.

This is thanks to its design made with only one singular twitter and a large elliptical mid/bass woofer. Generated by Class-H digital amplifiers, this provides the Roam a stable audio resolution no matter how much you position it.

Can Sonos Roam Do Stereo?

Although the Roam is a mono speaker through and through, it is possible to access stereo mode if you have another speaker of the same model. This is called stereo pairing, and you can only do this if you’re connected to a WiFi network. Here are the criteria for you to perform stereo pair on a Sonos Roam:

  • You can only use another Roam when doing stereo pair. Any other device won’t work, even if it is Sonos-made.
  • You should first register the two Roams as two separate rooms on the controller app.

If you’ve met all of the requirements, then it’s time to configure stereo pairing using the Sonos controller program. Here’s how to do it:

  • Launch the Sonos app on your iOS or Android device.
  • Go to the Settings tab, then look for ‘Systems’.
  • Check out the Products page and select one of the Roams you’re using as a stereo pair.
  • Tap ‘Set Up Stereo Pair’ and follow the application prompts.

You’ll now be able to enjoy a wider stereo experience, with one of the speakers busting the left audio channel. The other half then outputs the right audio channel.

Once you’re done with the stereo pair feature, you can easily separate them by going to the Products tab. Find the room with the stereo pair, and then click on ‘Separate Stereo Pair’. The in-app instructions will help you do the rest, and revert the rooms to their default names after separation.

Can Sonos Roam Do Stereo Pair With Bluetooth?

Configuring stereo pair is only possible with WiFi and the Sonos controller application. Trying it with Bluetooth is for naught because the brand has not added any feature of this in the Roam, or any of their devices

You may be used to a speaker capable of stereo pair via Bluetooth, so this may be a dealbreaker for you. However, keep in mind that the Roam is mostly designed to be a part of the multi-room system. The device being Bluetooth-enabled is a bonus, and only made to connect to a source device when away from the home network.

Is Sonos Roam 360?

Unlike other Bluetooth speakers in the market, the Sonos Roam is not a 360 audio blaster. Instead, it is a front-firing 180-degree speaker ideally pointed in a specific direction. You may think that this restricts the device’s potential, but Sonos claims that it is intentional.

The Roam will send sound to where it most makes sense, thanks to a triangular shape and flatter ends. Additionally, this design gives you more freedom in orientation. Whether you like to station it standing up or lying down, it’ll maximize quality on its own.

You may worry because the Roam is a portable outdoor speaker that may not function best at 180 degrees. However, Sonos included the Auto Trueplay feature in the wireless speaker for audio tuning. It’ll immediately adjust the sound based on the surroundings and works with either WiFi or Bluetooth connections.

Can You Use Sonos Roam for Surround Sound?

Although it seems ideal for the Roam to be used as a surround sound speaker, you can’t really use it for this function. This is because the brand designed the Roam to perform away from the home theater setup. It is more of an on-the-move device, not as an additional channel to your personal cinema.

If you want to station the Roam at home though, there’s another alternative. It may not be used as a surround speaker, but the tech is still part of Sonos’ multi-room family. You can sync them with other Sonos products, which will help you play a united media or audio of choice.

Can You Use 2 Sonos Roam as Surround Speakers?

Two Sonos Roam seems ideal when used as surround speakers, but unluckily, the brand did not design it for this particular role. Specifically, the Roam is made with mobility in mind. As such, being stationed as part of the home theater setup defeats its purpose.

Admittedly, the Roam is the perfect size and portability as a surround speaker. It’s also wireless, which is convenient as you can ideally pop it back up in the drawer once movie night is over. However, you can’t sync it with the Beam or Arc and expect it to function as one.

Does Sonos Roam Have Dolby Atmos?

Sonos Roam may have a lot of tricks up its sleeve, but supporting Dolby Atmos is not one of them. This feature is left to other Sonos-made technology, mainly their soundbars Arc and Beam (Gen 2).

You may have expected this to be added because of the Sonos S2 upgrade, but the improvement Roam got is for its battery life. Additionally, instead of the Dolby Atmos, the wireless speaker got Amazon Music instead.

Does Sonos Roam Have Line in?

One thing you should know about the Roam is that it is made to be wireless through and through. Any possibility of it functioning via the aux input is extinguished. If you’ve noticed, the Roam only has a charging port.

If you have any device that has no Bluetooth, then you can’t pair it up with Roam. However, this is really not that big of a deal. Sonos’ portable speakers are almost an all-around device able to pair via WiFi, Bluetooth, and even AirPlay.

Does Sonos Roam Have 3.5 mm?

Most waterproof products have no 3.5 mm inputs, and the Roam is no exception to this general practice. What you can find on the Roam is only a USB-C port made for its charging cable, nothing more.

Note that this Sonos speaker is made as a portable device, and prioritizes being wireless over anything else. Truth be told, having a 3.5 mm line-in will only serve as a drawback. It’s because the device is compatible with most connections, like WiFi and Bluetooth.

Can I Play Radio on Sonos Roam?

You can play the radio on the Roam as long as you have access to the controller application and a WiFi connection. This is possible because Sonos has its own radio program, which features almost 60,000 stations all over the globe.

Sonos Radio is a free radio service that you can control through the controller app. As such, you must register the Roam in the program before being able to access this feature.

It won’t even matter if you use an iOS or Android, you’ll be able to use this service freely as long as you have a compatible source device. Just go to the Browse page in the controller program, then locate Sonos Radio. For macOS or Windows, go to Select a Music Source, then tap Sonos Radio.

Does Sonos Roam Work With Amazon Music?

The Roam is part of Sonos’ S2 range of speakers, so it is more than capable of high-res Amazon Music streaming. This means you get access to an almost infinite number of songs and playlists.

You can access this through the Sonos controller app. The program serves as the bridge to connect Roam to authorized third-party programs. As long as you have a source device and a trusted WiFi connection, you’ll be able to play Amazon Music on your Roam speakers.

How to Play Amazon Music on Sonos Roam?

To play Amazon Music on your Roam, you’ll need to register the streaming service in your Sonos app first. However, before doing this, make sure that your wireless speaker is connected to WiFi. Additionally, you should have a subscription to Amazon Music and a source device linked with the controller app.

Configuring the streaming service to your Sonos app and speaker is easy after this. Here’s how to do it:

Using an iOS or Android Device

  • Launch the Sonos controller app and go to Settings. Find the ‘Services & Voice’ option.
  • Go to the Music & Content, then tap Add a Service. You’ll need to find Amazon Music in the list of streaming options.
  • Once you’ve located the service, click Add to Sonos. You’ll then be provided in-app instructions to log in to your Amazon Music account. If successful, you can play a song and play it to your Roam speakers.

Using Mac or PC

  • Navigate to the Sonos app on your computer. Click on Select a Music Source.
  • Tap Add Music Services then find Amazon Music on the list.
  • Follow the in-app prompts to finish setting up your Amazon subscription account. Once done, you can now go to Amazon Music via the Sonos app and stream using your choice speakers.

Does Apple Music Work With Sonos Roam?

Several streaming services have formed partnerships with Sonos, and Apple Music is one of them. With it, you’re able to play about 75 million songs ad-free in your Roam, or any connected Sonos device. As long as you link your speaker to the controller app, you get to access this Apple Music feature, and many more including:

  • Curated playlists that update daily
  • Access to your entire Apple Library
  • Listen to live radio artists streaming on Apple Music 1, Apple Music Hits, and Apple Music Country
  • Explicit music badging

If you’re still skeptical about getting the premium subscription, you can even avail of the free trial within the Sonos app. This will provide you with three months of unpaid Apple Music services. You can do this on your iOS device:

  • Launch the Sonos application then locate the ‘Add Music Service’ option. Find Apple Music then click on Add to Sonos.
  • You’ll find a ‘Start 3-Month Free Trial’ selection, click it. This will prompt you to enter your details and will provide you with premium services freely for three months.

If you have an Android device, you can also partake in this. Just go to Google Play Store then download Apple Music. Once done, open the app and sign up to avail your three-month free trial.

Is the Sonos Roam Waterproof?

Sonos wasn’t joking when they released their first truly portable speakers. They made the Roam an on-the-go companion, pretty durable and waterproof to boot. Be it a random camping trip or a planned beach getaway, it will provide high-res audio streaming anywhere.

With an ingress protection rating of IP67, you can submerge it at a depth of up to 3.3 ft (1 m) with no problem. As long as you dry it properly, then you can constantly use the Roam as a perfect pool party audio device.

How to Dry Sonos Roam

Sonos may have dubbed the Roam their ‘fully waterproof speaker’, but it doesn’t mean that it is impermeable to water infinitely. You can only leave the speaker lying in shallow water for thirty minutes. After that, you should dry it religiously or you risk permanent damage.

Here are some pointers to follow when drying the Sonos Roam, or any other speakers in the brand’s product line:

  • Use a dry cloth or towel when drying the Roam.
  • Air-drying the Roam after wiping it is effective in eliminating excess water.
  • Avoid using a hairdryer or any heat-drying devices to speed up the process. Not only will it risk damaging the product’s internal system, but also the matte finish.

Does Sonos Roam Float?

Dropping it in shallow waters won’t damage the Roam, but floating is not on its list of smart capabilities. True, it only weighs 0.95 lb (0.43 kg) but it doesn’t mean its materials offer full buoyancy. It will sink to the bottom, but the good news is you still get to salvage it as long as it’s within IP67 boundaries.

If you want the Roam to be truly joined at your hip even while you’re swimming, then you could station it on a floaty. This way, you can listen to its audio closely while enjoying a splash in the swimming pool. This is not without risk though, so it’s best to consider your decisions.

Can You Submerge Sonos Roam?

You can submerge the Roam in up to 3.3 ft (1 m) of water and it’ll do just fine. As Sonos’ most durable speaker, it can withstand rain, splashing, and accidental submersion. This is only plausible for thirty minutes at the maximum.

This means that it will still play audio continuously while in waist-deep waters. It won’t sound great though, but it’s nice to know there will be no lasting effects.

Can You Use Sonos Roam in the Shower?

If you’re someone who likes to hit the notes while showering, then the Roam may be the right Sonos product for you. It’s waterproof for thirty minutes and quite durable to boot, so you won’t worry about the water hitting it.

The Roam is not the first bathroom-friendly speaker that Sonos has built. However, its edge lies in its portability and compact size. It’s also battery-powered, able to last up to 10 hours unplugged.

You can leisurely lean back on your tub and stream the latest music without worrying about running out of battery steam. The Roam is also high in the weatherproof rating, so you can enjoy hot showers without sweating about it.

Can You Take Sonos Roam to the Beach?

Not only can you take the Sonos Roam to the beach, but you can share with it a little splash in the ocean. Guaranteed to last 30 minutes in shallow water measuring 3.3 ft (1 m), you can put it on a lilo without worrying about water damage. It won’t float though, so you should think of countermeasures for that.

When you’re sunbathing, you could position it on the ground and it’ll emerge unscathed. You can even put it on the rocks, streaming music with the best clarity while hanging around the beach fire.

This is all possible because the Roam has an IP67 rating. For reference, this rating measures the device’s resistance against dust, water, rust, and other foreign intrusions.

Is the Sonos Roam Sand-Proof?

The Roam is rated 6 in the Ingress Protection Code which is the highest in terms of solid protection. This means it’s completely dirt and sand-proof. You could dunk the device in a hole of sand and there will be no prolonged damage.

In instances where you left the Roam alone basking in the sand, all you need to do is brush the particles off. You won’t need to worry about debris and accumulation because it’s completely resistant to dust and sand.

Can Sonos Roam Be Used Outside?

The Roam is not the first portable speaker Sonos has built, but it’s the first one you can bring anywhere. By anywhere, it means that it’s so compact and durable it can even go outside the boundaries of your home. In fact, it performs so well outdoors that it brings out the bass-heavy speaker’s potential.

This is not just luck, because Sonos bid their time in releasing a device with exceptional audio in open spaces. When they released the Roam with a proven IP67 rating, the brand guaranteed that it’s functional for outside use. Coupled with Sonos’ signature sound quality, you’ll enjoy using the wireless speaker outside, including the beach.

Is Sonos Roam Good for Outdoors?

There are a lot of portable speakers that you can bring outside, but not all of them can be considered good. In this regard, you’ll find no issues with the Roam. Durable and compact while not skimping on audio quality, Sonos really pulled through with this wireless device.

First, it has an IP67 rating. This means that it has the best resistance against harmful dirt even after being in contact for eight straight hours. You’ll find it a non-fussy companion because you can even station it on the rocks without much worry about damage.

On the audio part, Roam’s design works quite well with the outdoor scene. Functioning in mono, you get to decide how to station the Roam based on your comfort. With its angled build, you’ll have clarity and stable audio no matter its position.

Its strong powerful bass is also a perk when used outdoors. With it, vocals will be more noticeable amidst the bass and soft trebles. In short, you’ll only experience the richest dynamic sonic presentation when you use the Roam outside.

How Does Sonos Roam Work Outside?

If you have a deep connection with the Sonos ecosystem, you’ll notice how rare the Roam really is. It has Bluetooth features, which will enable it to work outside without giving you too much trouble. As long as you have a compatible source device, you can stream audio from anywhere outdoors.

Most of the brand’s tech is rooted through the local home network, so they’re impossible to bring outside. With Roam, you get to jump off this hurdle in more ways than one. Aside from the Bluetooth function, it is also compatible with AirPlay which is a plus for iOS users.

If you have pre-downloaded music installed in your source device, then you can play it on the Roam no matter where you are outside.

How to Properly Clean Sonos Roam

It’s a given that the Roam is waterproof and shock-proof. However, it doesn’t mean it’s also resistant to all kinds of stains and dirt. Your wireless device may be susceptible to smudges, especially if you put it to good use.

In these instances, here are the things you can do to properly clean it:

  • Use only a soft, dry lint-free cloth. If you have stubborn dirt, just wet the cloth slightly with a mild soap solution.
  • Don’t use harsh chemicals like alcohol or paint thinners because it will ruin the Roam’s hardware.
  • Since the Roam also has microphones, avoid using a vacuum to clean it.
  • When wet, wipe it with a towel and then air dry. Avoid using a hairdryer or any hot air tools as it will only cause unwanted damage.

Is There a Case for Sonos Roam?

The Roam can take quite a hit, so Sonos hasn’t released a protective case for their portable speakers. It seems counterproductive for a product with an already tough build that can withstand several bangs and falls.

However, if you’re particular about scratches, then Sonos-collaborator Flexson can save your day. They launched a travel case cover for the portable speaker that you can loop to backpacks, bike frames, or carry as it is.

Can You Speak to Sonos Roam?

Speaking to the Sonos Roam is possible because it supports voice assistants. That’s right, the wireless speaker is a great companion, able to carry on basic conversations when you feel like it.

Aside from functioning as part of Sonos’ multi-room family, it also doubles as a portable Bluetooth device. This is already an achievement in itself, but the Roam also works as a top-of-the-line smart speaker. This means you get to converse with it as long as you activate the voice command in the controller app.

How to Activate Voice Command on Sonos Roam

Before you’re able to speak to Roam and activate the voice command hands-free, you’ll need to configure it in the Sonos app. Here’s how you do it in a few simple steps:

When You’re Using iOS or Android Device

  • Launch the Sonos controller app then go to Settings. Navigate to Services & Voice.
  • Under the Voice option, click on ‘Add a Service’. Then choose which smart assistant you’d like to activate.

There will be no Voice section if your area is not supported with any voice services. In this case, you can’t do any hands-off commands on your Sonos Roam.

Does Alexa Work With Sonos Roam?

Alexa is one of the smart assistants that you can smoothly access with your wireless Roam device. This is Amazon’s cloud-based service that you can use to perform basic tasks and be able to mimic conversations. When integrated with Sonos’s portable speakers, you can even use it to play and control audio.

You can use Alexa with the Roam by activating the voice control option in the Sonos App. However, make sure you registered the Roam to the latest version of the Sonos system. You’ll also need to download the Amazon Alexa app on your source device and set up your Amazon account.

If you’ve got it figured out, here’s how you can set up Alexa and integrate it into your Roam device:

  • Open the Sonos controller app on your iOS or Android device. Go to the Settings page then click on Services & Voice.
  • Tap ‘Add a Voice Assistant’ then choose Amazon Alexa. You’ll then be pushed to sign in to your Sonos account.
  • Once done, select Add to Sonos. You’ll see a page of Sonos speakers that are compatible with voice service.
  • Choose the rooms you like to integrate Alexa with, including the place the Roam is. Select ‘Add Amazon Alexa’.
  • After you choose your speakers, select ‘Sign in to Amazon’ and you’ll be taken to the Amazon login tab.
  • Follow the instructions to make Alexa accessible to your Roam speakers.
  • If you want the Alexa chime to be activated when you say “Alexa”, then enable it during setup. This is turned off by default, but it’s under your choice anytime.
  • Upon prompt, click ‘Go to Alexa app’. Then link all the music services you have in the Alexa program to the Sonos app.
  • If you’re successful in linking, return to the Sonos controller app. Click on ‘I’ve Set Up My Music In Alexa’.

Once you’ve finished these steps, you’re free to use Alexa on the Roam, and any device you enable it with. However, note that Alexa is not available globally.

You can only use Alexa as a Roam assistant in select countries. These include Australia, Austria, Canada, France, Germany, Ireland, and Italy. Japan, Mexico, New Zealand, Spain, United Kingdom, and United States are also countries Alexa is available.

Does Sonos Roam Have Alexa Built-in?

The Roam has built-in support for Alexa, giving you a companion you can input basic commands with. You can bring it anywhere around the house and only speak the magic keywords to activate Amazon’s smart assistant.

Sonos dubbed the Roam as their smartest speaker ever, so it’s no doubt that it can accommodate artificial intelligence too. It’s also portable to boot, so you can access Alexa as long as you have the speaker on hand. You can even have a brief conversation while in the shower, as long the speaker is connected to WiFi.

Does Google Assistant Work With Sonos Roam?

Google Assistant is another artificial intelligence that can work seamlessly with the Roam. You can do a whole range of basic commands and simple tasks with it. As long as you set it up to work in your Sonos controller app, then you can enjoy your smart speaker to the fullest.

Before anything else, ensure you have the Google Assistant program in your source device and that you’ve signed in to your account already. Your Roam should also be registered as part of your latest Sonos system.

Here’s the process of setting up Google Assistant in the Roam:

  • Open the Sonos controller app then navigate to Settings. Then tap on Services and Voice.
  • Under the Voice tab, tap Add a Service.

What Apps Work With Sonos Roam?

You can get almost an infinite list of applications with Roam. Considering its potential to utilize multiple connections, there is no limitation to programs it can work with.

First off, you can pair it with the Sonos controller application. This alone gives you access to over 130 affiliated services, including Spotify and iHeartRadio.

It’s not limited to that, because you get to access almost any application and play their audio outside the controller program. As long as you connect the Roam via Bluetooth, you can play media from any app, game, or program streaming on your source device. This applies to AirPlay as well.

Can Sonos Roam Be Used With the S1 App?

The Roam is not part of Sonos’ list of legacy products, so you’re unable to control it using the S1 app. If you’re still using the Sonos S1 controller program, it’s unlikely that you’ll even see the speaker as part of the existing network.

As such, you’ll have to download the compatible version of the Sonos app for you to utilize the wireless audio device. This will require you to add all your music services from scratch after setting up a new Sonos system.

Another alternative is to download the two controller app version. Keep the S1 app for your legacy Sonos products so you won’t need to start over from scratch. Then, set up the Roam on your S2 program to separate it from the legacy devices.

Does Sonos Roam Work With the S2 App?

The Sonos S2 controller application is compatible and works well with the Roam. In fact, it’s the only version that can control the speaker even from far away.

This S2 app is the key to more upgrades for the Roam and other fellow non-legacy devices. You’re basically giving a chance for your speaker to get more intelligent over time due to free software updates.

How to Set Up Sonos Roam in the S2 App

When you first purchase the Roam, you’ll need to set it up via the S2 App. If you fail to do this, then the speaker may as well be non-functional. You’re also bound to miss all the updates for your portable speaker and even some of the cool in-app features.

To set up the Roam in the S2 app before usage, you’ll need a source device and your local WiFi connection. These two are non-negotiable. Both are essential in linking your wireless speaker to the existing Sonos network.

Here’s a step-by-step process on how to set up Roam in the S2 app via WiFi:

  • Press the power button on the wireless speaker until it emits a blinking green light. This indicates that the device is ready for setup and you’ll find the button on the back of the speakers.
  • Go to the App Store or Google Playstore and search for the Sonos controller app. Make sure you download the S2 version because this is the only variation compatible with the Roam.
  • After downloading, launch the controller program then go over the set-up prompts.
  • Several notification windows will appear which you should allow. One will show, ‘This app will discover and connect to devices on the networks you use’. The other one entails, ‘Sonos would like to find and connect to the devices on the local network’.
  • Agreeing to these prompts will allow the app to look into the home network for compatible devices. The terms and warranty page will also appear, which you should read thoroughly before agreeing.
  • Another notification will ask you if you want to set up a new Sonos system or connect to an existing one. If you choose to create a new one, you’ll need to make a new account or sign in to your one.
  • After account setup, an ‘Allow Auto-Discovery’ tab will show. Allow access to your device’s location on this page. You’ll also need to permit Bluetooth configuration.
  • Once done, the Settings page of the controller app will show. Go to the top portion of the screen and wait for the Roam to be identified and read. Tap ‘Add Sonos Roam’ to include the speaker in your app.
  • Wait for a few moments for the sync to finish and the application to link to the Roam. You’ll then be prompted to tap your source device to your wireless speakers. Additionally, the app will require you to remove any necessary blockage between your widgets.
  • Tap ‘Continue’ and wait for the device code to be read. After a few seconds, connect to your home WiFi. Enter your password and then click on Connect.
  • After a successful connection, a notification window will pop up. This will say that the Roam is linked to the home network and will lead you to another screen.
  • This screen shows that you should update your portable speakers. Agree to the window and wait for a few minutes for the update to finish. Check your source device for any notice of successful update then click on Done.
  • Additional information about the Roam will show on the final screen. After you’ve read them, you’ll be able to stream media from the Sonos S2 app to the wireless speakers.

The process of connecting the Roam to your WiFi network and recording it in the S2 app is extensive. However, all Sonos users go through with these, and for good reasons. Connecting to the controller app gives you infinite possibilities, and even enables you to use the Roam outdoors.

Can You Use Sonos Roam Without the Sonos App?

Using the Roam with the controller program is ideal, especially as you get to stream to multiple music services. However, you’re also capable of utilizing the speaker without the Sonos app if you use Bluetooth. Furthermore, if you’re involved with the Apple ecosystem, you can also use AirPlay instead of the S2.

There’s a catch though, like with all of the brand’s extensive list of products. To make the Roam work and function, you’ll need to link it with the Sonos app right after purchase. If you miss this step, forget about being online, you’re also unable to use the speaker via Bluetooth.

Apple indeed had a reputation of keeping its circle of devices to itself, but that has long gone down the drain. In fact, Sonos and its products can link to Apple techs via Airplay or even Bluetooth.

This is not limited to Apple’s set of widgets but also applies to their music service as well. Within the Sonos app, the Roam can access Apple Music including the whole catalog and libraries.

Does Sonos Roam Work With AirPlay?

Few portable speakers support AirPlay 2, and the Roam is one of them. This means that the wireless device is capable of pairing to AirPlay 2 devices, even without the help of WiFi connections. You’re able to access multi-room audio and play media from iPhones or any product with the same feature.

  • Open the Control Center page on your device. Either swipe up or down, depending on your iPhone or iPad model.

There are three ways to connect the Roam to your iPhone, and you just need to choose which one of them works best for you. One of the most convenient ways is through the AirPlay feature, which all iPhone models have. This is a flex for the Sonos Roam because few portable speakers can cater to this exclusive perk.

Connect the Roam via Bluetooth

  • Turn the portable Roam speaker on by pressing the button on the hardware controls. Then press and hold the same button for two seconds or until you hear a chime.
  • The LED indicator will also flash blue, indicating that it is in Bluetooth pairing mode.

Does Sonos Roam Work With Android?

For a device as small as Roam, you’ll find it surprising that Sonos managed to pack it with a lot of tricks. It’s capable of pairing with most operating systems out there, including Android. Is Sonos Roam Compatible With Samsung TV?

Although the Roam does not possess an HDMI cable, it is still compatible with the Samsung TV. This is because the portable speaker is one of the few Sonos products that have built-in Bluetooth functions. However, before getting your hopes up, check whether your TV model has Bluetooth pairing features.

If it does, then navigate to the Settings page of the streaming server of choice. Also, activate Bluetooth pairing mode on your Roam. This is done by pressing the power button for more than a few seconds until the LED light flashes blue.

After this, search for compatible devices in your streaming server. You’ll find the Roam in the list of available tech, click on it. Wait for a few seconds to sync the Samsung TV and Sonos’ portable device.

Does Sonos Roam Work With Apple TV?

The Roam is compatible with almost all devices, even those of different brands and operating systems. It’s even functional as an Apple TV accessory, upgrading your couch potato sound experience. In fact, there are three ways to sync your wireless speaker with Apple TV.

Roam to Apple TV Linking via Bluetooth

  • For Bluetooth pairing to work, you need to ensure that your Apple TV is capable of this feature. If it is, link the Apple TV box to your smart TV using an HDMI cable.
  • Then go to the Settings tab and scroll down until you see the Audio and Video Option. Tap Audio Output and select Sonos Roam as the medium.

Once you’ve played audio or a movie on your Apple TV, the Roam will serve as the output speaker. You can cut this connection by turning the Bluetooth off on either of the devices.

Roam to Apple TV Linking via AirPlay

  • Pair the Apple TV remote with the Apple TV. After establishing a connection, hold the TV button on the remote then select AirPlay.

AirPlay is an Apple-exclusive link that Sonos Roam is compatible with. However, you should note that this connection won’t work if the speaker is not registered in the Sonos app.

Roam to Apple TV Linking via Wire

  • If you have a USB-C cable lying around, then you can plug it in the port located at the back of the Roam. Connect the other end to the Apple TV’s port.
  • Plug the Apple TV box on the smart TV using an HDMI cable. After connecting all the cables, navigate to Settings then click on Audio and Video.
  • Find the Audio Output tab and then choose Sonos Roam.

This wired connection is more of a gamble, as the Roam is not meant for wired use. However, this is worth a try if your TV does not have any Bluetooth pairing feature.

Should I Buy Sonos Roam?

There are a lot of factors to consider when opting for a speaker upgrade. True, the Roam has a lot of attractive offers and smart features, but it all comes down to your preferences. You should also factor in a lot of things, including your planned usage and budget.

Here are some of the reasons why you should buy the Roam:

  • You Have Other Sonos Speakers at Home. The Roam is capable of functioning as a Bluetooth device, but it shines well within the Sonos system. This means you get to connect it with other sister speakers and you’ll discover how exceptional it is.
  • You Want a Durable Speaker With Style. With Sonos’ unique design aesthetic, you’ll never find yourself carrying subpar-looking speakers. Aside from the pretty appearance, it’s durable to boot. You can carry the Roam anywhere, be it beaches or random outdoor trips.
  • You Prefer Bass-Heavy Speakers. There’s no denying the Roam’s bass-heavy audio quality. This is planned by Sonos, as strong bass works well in the outdoors. Remember, the Roam is made to be an on-the-go device.

Here are some of the reasons why you should refrain from buying the Roam:

  • You’re on a Tight Budget. Granted, the Roam is the cheapest device in the Sonos ecosystem. However, it is not the best choice among other brands when you’re saving money.
  • The Roam is Not for Audiophiles. It’s actually exceptional for its size and gives a quality sound experience. However, it’s lacking when compared to audiophile-grade speakers.
  • Voice Assistance Won’t Work Over Bluetooth. The Roam is a smart speaker, but it is not capable of catering to voice commands without WiFi. When in Bluetooth mode, note that it is only a simple Bluetooth speaker.

Where to Buy the Sonos Roam

If you’re dead set on purchasing the Roam, then your next step is finding the right store that will send it right to your doorstep. In this regard, your best bet is to buy the device directly on the Sonos website.

For $179, you get a portable speaker with sound-defying capabilities. Also included in the bundle are the USB-C cable for charging and a single instruction manual.

There are also alternatives to the Sonos website in case they don’t have the Roam in stock. You can also purchase from John Lewis, Argos, Very, and Best Buy. Amazon is also an option, but make sure that the transaction is safe.
